Shawn,
I’ve been trying to upload a new photo to use at the top of my new WordPress 3.0 (2010 themeed) web site and I keep getting the following message:
“Grand Island Aeriel 5.jpg” has failed to upload due to an error
Unable to create directory /var/www/vhosts/mcsells.com/httpdocs/wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
What the heck is the “parent directory” and how can I find out if it’s writable? Any suggestions?

Hi Mike,
This error means that there is no folder called, “uploads” inside of the “wp-content” folder on your web server. If you have FTP access to the web server on which your site is hosted, you can simply open the wp-content folder and create a new folder called, “uploads” and then assign it writable permissions (777).
If that’s too complicated, you can usually accomplish the same thing via a web browser-based control panel furnished by your hosting provider. Most of these provide a File Manager functionality, which will enable you to create this folder and ensure that it is writable by the web browser.
If this still sounds too complicated, simply contact your web hosting provider and ask them to create the folder for you.
To your success!

Shawn,
Once again, thank you! I’ll give it a try and I’ll let you know how I do. Thanks again.

Shawn, thank you for the personal response to my WordPress question. I am glad I made a contribution to your fine videos. The one question I had about placing images was answered quickly. That one answer alone was worth the small price paid. Keep up the good work.
